LUIS PEREZ CALVO
Luis Pérez Calvo (Madrid, 1962) is a painter and illustrator whose work draws directly from the circus, cinema, urban popular music, rummaging through El Rastro, festivals and old comics . Raised between the popular Madrid neighborhoods of Lavapiés and Embajadores, his imaginary responds to the most traditional and popular Spanish culture from the '60s to the '80s, eminently. Thus, in his works, the Beach Boys rub shoulders with Superman, Batman or the characters of Ibáñez; classic food dishes with fragments of old magazines and Bazooka gum wrappers or advertisements for Lagarto soaps.
Luis Pérez Calvo –called by some popular culture archaeologists- rereads, paints, draws, cuts, pastes, ironizes and tirelessly pays homage to all those beings and memories that populate his memory and that he tries to recover in a melancholic but fun attempt to catch a fetishized society of a recent past that gradually disappears.
